(By Rev. Tim Schwartz) — As October begins, we are reminded that not only is it Clergy Appreciation month but also National Chaplain Month. While pastors have been the subject of previous prayer focuses, let us also pray for the chaplains that serve in our country and around the globe.
Let us pray prayers of thanks for our hospital chaplains, prison chaplains, college chaplains, military chaplains, institutional chaplains, marketplace chaplains, police chaplains, fire chaplains and hospice chaplains, just to name a few of them. Let us ask God to strengthen and encourage all of these chaplains as they care for so many people who are experiencing difficulties and tragedies in their lives. Let us pray for these many children of God, who need a touch of God’s love, a listening ear, a calming presence and some basic human understanding and empathy. May Jesus help bind up their wounds through the person of the chaplain in their lives!
Finally, let us pray that the Holy Spirit will grant wisdom to our chaplains as they come alongside all who need loving care and kindness. As the scripture says: “...and be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you.” Ephesians 4:32 (NRSV)
